Gardeners Acton Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Acton is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a manner that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, subcontractors, clients and the wider public. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety in all gardening activities, including work in private gardens, communal outdoor spaces and commercial grounds.
Policy Aims and Objectives
Our aim is to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property or the environment arising from our work. We seek to continually improve our health and safety performance by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing effective control measures that are appropriate to gardening operations.
All work will be planned, organised and carried out so far as is reasonably practicable to ensure it is safe, without unacceptable risk, and compliant with current health and safety legislation and accepted industry best practice.
Roles and Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the management of Gardeners Acton, who will ensure that adequate resources, training and supervision are provided. Management will review this policy regularly and update it as necessary to reflect changes in legislation, guidance and the nature of our services.
Employees and subcontractors have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. They are required to follow all safety instructions, use equipment correctly, wear any specified personal protective equipment and report hazards, incidents or near misses promptly.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before starting gardening work, suitable and sufficient risk assessments will be carried out to identify potential hazards such as uneven ground, slopes, water features, overhead obstacles, buried services, sharp tools, powered machinery and exposure to weather conditions.
Control measures will be implemented and communicated to all relevant personnel. These may include safe systems of work, method statements, the use of suitable tools and machinery, appropriate protective equipment and clear communication with clients about any site-specific risks.
Risk assessments will be reviewed periodically and whenever there are significant changes to work activities, locations or equipment used in the course of gardening operations.
Training, Competence and Supervision
Gardeners Acton will ensure that all personnel are competent to perform their gardening tasks safely. This includes initial training, on-the-job instruction and refresher training where required.
Training will cover correct use of tools and machinery, safe manual handling, control of substances used in gardening, awareness of environmental hazards, and procedures for emergency situations. Additional specialist training will be provided for the use of powered equipment, machinery or any high-risk activity.
Appropriate supervision will be provided, particularly for new or inexperienced staff, and for higher-risk tasks or unfamiliar sites within our service area.
Use of Tools, Machinery and Personal Protective Equipment
All gardening tools and machinery will be selected, maintained and used in accordance with manufacturer instructions and relevant safety guidance. Defective or damaged equipment will be removed from service immediately and reported for repair or replacement.
Gardeners Acton will provide, or require the use of, suitable personal protective equipment where necessary. This may include gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, high-visibility clothing, respiratory protection and weather-appropriate clothing. Personnel must use and care for this equipment correctly and report any defects without delay.
Chemicals, Substances and Environmental Hazards
Where gardening work involves the use of chemicals or other potentially hazardous substances, a formal assessment will be carried out to identify required control measures. Only authorised and trained individuals may handle such substances, and they must follow all instructions for safe use, storage, transport and disposal.
We will take reasonable steps to minimise impact on the local environment, including careful use of pesticides and fertilisers, responsible waste management, and protection of plants, wildlife and water courses. Waste arising from gardening activities will be handled and disposed of using safe and lawful methods.
Manual Handling and Physical Safety
Many gardening tasks involve lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling tools, equipment, soil, plants and waste. Gardeners Acton will reduce the risk of manual handling injuries by planning work to minimise heavy or awkward loads, using mechanical aids where appropriate, and providing training in safe lifting and handling techniques.
Personnel are expected to assess their own capabilities and request assistance or alternative methods where a task exceeds what can be done safely by one person.
Public, Client and Property Protection
Our teams will conduct gardening work in a way that minimises risk to clients, visitors, neighbours and the general public. This includes maintaining tidy work areas, using barriers or warning signs where appropriate, and controlling access to areas where powered equipment or sharp tools are in use.
Care will be taken to avoid damage to buildings, structures, fences, paths, vehicles and neighbouring properties. Any unintentional damage or near miss incidents will be reported and investigated so that lessons can be learned and future incidents prevented.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, cases of ill health, dangerous occurrences and near misses associated with gardening activities must be reported to management as soon as possible. Records of such events will be maintained and used to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
Gardeners Acton will ensure that suitable emergency arrangements are in place for the locations where we work. Personnel will be informed of procedures for dealing with first aid, fires, severe weather, public safety concerns and any site-specific risks that may require special action.
Consultation, Communication and Review
Gardeners Acton encourages open communication on health and safety matters. Employees and subcontractors are invited to raise concerns, suggest improvements and participate in discussions about safe working practices for gardening tasks.
This policy will be reviewed at regular intervals and following any significant incident, change in operations, or modification to legal or industry requirements. Updated versions will be communicated to all relevant personnel so that everyone understands their responsibilities and the standards expected.
By working together to follow this policy, Gardeners Acton aims to deliver high-quality gardening services while maintaining a safe and healthy environment for all those affected by our work.
